A 'comeback' for the Azores bullfinch: How two decades of hope saved a species from the brink
In 1999, the Azores protected the Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme region for the endangered Azores bullfinch. Conservationists removed invasive plants and planted 500,000 native trees to restore the habitat. Two decades of work paid off, as recent surveys showed the population grew to an estimated 1,300 birds in total.
