The UK government’s new Energy Wealth Fund is just window-dressing to calm internal Labour Party opposition. Critics said the plan is a "weak hypothecation of some North Sea tax revenues" to fund low carbon projects. Many fear the Treasury will never let these uncertain funds actually boost our public spending.
We need to see the UK government's newly announced Energy Wealth Fund for what it is: window-dressing, a sweetener intended to buy off internal Labour Party opposition to its decision to allow more drilling for North Sea gas ("Ministers approve Jackdaw gasfield as Rosebank project hangs in the balance", Report, October 22). All that is happening is a weak hypothecation of some North Sea tax revenues, from Jackdaw or elsewhere, to low carbon projects. The Treasury would surely never permit a new and uncertain revenue stream to feed directly into higher public spending.
