This map compares the results with the margins in the 2024 presidential election. Only areas that have reported almost all of their votes are shown.

Since 2008, just two Democrats have won a partisan statewide contest in Ohio: Sherrod Brown, who is back on the ballot this year after narrowly losing his bid for a fourth Senate term in 2024, and Barack Obama, who won the state twice before President Trump carried it by wide margins in each of his presidential campaigns...

One worry that Republicans have had in Florida is that close statewide races -- even if they are eventually won by Republicans -- would mean stronger Democratic turnout in House races, possibly leading to surprises and upsets in a state where Republicans currently hold 20 out of 28 congressional seats.

The first vote drops in Florida were remarkably strong for Angie Nixon, the Democratic nominee for Senate, who was winning early votes in the majority-Hispanic counties of Miami-Dade and Osceola by 10 and 24 percentage points. Both of those counties had flipped to Republicans in 2024...

Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, a Republican congresswoman with celebrity status in MAGA circles, appears to be locked in a tough fight with Leela Gray, a retired Army brigadier general and a Democrat, in her St. Petersburg-based district.

Whatever happens tonight, the results will look very Democratic for the next half hour or longer -- including in states where Democrats are considered underdogs, like Florida or South Carolina. That's because most of these states report their early votes first, and the early vote was heavily Democratic this year. Republicans hope to counter with votes cast on Election Day, which will be reported later on.

President Trump appears to be watching Fox News, and he isn't happy with what he's seeing. The president has denounced the cable channel in three Truth Social posts within a span of 95 minutes, accusing the network of "spending too much time covering the Trump Deranged Dumocrats!" He added, at 7 p.m., that Fox News's ratings were "way down, not because of me, but because they are AGAINST me!"

In Georgia, where polls just closed, the first batches of votes typically consist of ballots cast by those who voted absentee or early in-person. Margins may significantly shift as ballots from Election Day voters are posted.

One contest to watch in Florida, where most polling places have begun to close, is the governor's race. Florida has leaned Republican the last few elections. But life in the state has gotten very expensive, and that is one statewide race -- between David Jolly, the Democrat, and Byron Donalds, the Republican -- that both parties found to be much more competitive than they expected going into the midterms.

The incumbent Republican in Indiana's Third Congressional District, Representative Marlin Stutzman, who is trailing with just 39 percent of votes reported, is a lawmaker who rarely makes waves or national headlines, but he gained attention this year when he introduced a plan in Congress to phase out direct military aid to Israel in favor of a transition to a joint defense and economic investment program between the country and the U.S...

Just before the polls closed, supporters of Angie Nixon, the Democratic candidate for Senate in Florida, made last-minute calls at her election-night watch party in Jacksonville to get out the vote.

At Ken Paxton's watch party in Dallas, the campaign staff has wheeled out a cannon. It is unclear if the cannon is real or a replica. It resembles the famous cannon that became a symbol of the Battle of Gonzales in 1835, the first major military clash between settlers in what would eventually become Texas and the Mexican Army during the Texas Revolution. Paxton, a Republican, is running for the Senate against James Talarico, a Democrat seeking to win the first statewide race for his party since the 1990s.

President Trump is not expected to make a public appearance tonight, but he is sharing his real-time thoughts on Truth Social. So far, he is particularly angry about Fox News's coverage tonight. An hour ago, Trump said he was turning off Fox because he "can't stand Jessica Tarlov's voice" and would return to the channel later. Tarlov is the resident liberal on Fox News. But Trump appears to still be watching Fox because he is now criticizing its polling. "Every question is a hit job," he wrote.

The incumbent in Indiana's Fifth Congressional District, Representative Victoria Spartz, is an idiosyncratic figure in the House G.O.P. conference and a frequent nuisance for Republican leaders. That is in part because of her reputation for changing her mind on how she plans to vote on major legislation at the last minute, including on the Republican budget bill teeing up her party's marquee tax and spending cuts legislation.

House Democrats are watching three key races in Florida to provide them with some early signs of how the night is going: the re-election bids of Representatives Kathy Castor, Jared Moskowitz and Darren Soto. All are Democrats who are vulnerable this year because of Republican redistricting efforts, and their races are likely to be some of the early ones that are called tonight. If they win, Democrats said they expected more good news to follow through the night.

The first votes out of Indiana's Fifth Congressional District show an advantage for Democrats. If reporting patterns are consistent with the 2024 presidential election, that first drop is early vote. In 2024, Kamala Harris won the first drop in Hamilton County, primarily consisting of early votes, by two percentage points, before ultimately losing the county by six. Tonight, J.D. Ford, the Democrat, is winning the first drop in Hamilton County by 27 points.

Statewide race calls won't come in Florida until 8 p.m. Eastern at the earliest. The state, where polls close at 7 p.m. local time, is mostly in the Eastern time zone except for the Panhandle, which is on Central time. The Associated Press will wait until all polls are closed across the state before declaring winners in the statewide races.

The polls at Henry Ford High School, which is in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Detroit, have been active all day with voters of all ages. Many are casting ballots for the first time, volunteers here said...

Turnout has been high in general, but in Florida it is running roughly on par with the 2024 presidential election, and Republicans are winning Election Day votes by a nearly two-to-one margin. The result? While Republicans led registered Democrats by just two percentage points in the advance vote -- their lowest such advantage in years -- they now lead by nearly nine points statewide. In 2024, they had an 11-point advantage. Of course, party registration can't tell us much about persuasion, and any Democratic victory in Florida, where Republican numbers have surged in recent years, would come from winning over a large number of Republicans and independents.

I'm in Anchorage, Alaska, where a handful of large signs on street corners warn voters that one House candidate, Eric Hafner, is not who he seems. Hafner is running as a Democrat but is also an inmate in federal prison whom Republicans have propped up before, and Democrats are worried that he will split votes with the independent candidate they're backing, Bill Hill...

Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York, the Democratic minority leader, just spoke briefly to reporters, projecting confidence about his party's chances of winning the House. Still, he would not say whether he planned to call President Trump once the results were in, and he would not make projections on how big a margin Democrats might have next year...

Polls have closed in eastern Kentucky, the first of the night. Pre-election polls in the state showed Andy Barr, the Republican candidate running to replace Senator Mitch McConnell, leading Charles Booker, the Democratic candidate, by around nine percentage points. While that is a significant margin, President Trump won the state by more than 30 points in 2024.

For the first hour after polls start to close at 6 p.m. Eastern, Kentucky will be one of the two states reporting results. One of the earliest races to watch will be in the state's Sixth Congressional District, where polling has been sparse. The only publicly released surveys have come from Zach Dembo, the Democratic nominee, or Democratic-affiliated organizations, making it likely that results are being released selectively. Still, Dembo has led in these polls since late July, including by more than five percentage points in each of the four most recent surveys...

President Trump is set to start hosting an election watch party in the East Room later this evening. His Truth Social feed suggests he's been watching Fox News, along with other coverage, none of which has indicated that a good night is coming for the bulk of his party.

Polls in South Carolina show a surprisingly tight race. In a state that Donald Trump won by about 18 percentage points in 2024, the latest Times/Siena poll shows Darline Graham, the Republican senator, running neck-and-neck with Annie Andrews, the Democratic nominee. Graham, who was recently appointed to the Senate after her brother, Lindsey Graham, died earlier this year, has been ahead by a narrow margin in many of the other polls.

In Juneau, Alaska, Elizabeth Thomas said Republican suggestions that the state's top-four, ranked-choice ballots or the placement of two candidates named Dan Sullivan might confuse people were overblown. It took her just a few minutes at the Alaska State Museum to vote for Mary Peltola...

Representative Hakeem Jeffries, Democrat of New York and minority leader, just arrived at the hotel in Washington where volunteers are phone banking, to thank them for their work. "What you all have represented throughout the last two years, which have been incredibly difficult, gives us all hope and inspiration that we are going to be able to bring about a brighter future," he told a few dozen young volunteers who were making calls. "We're on the brink of a dramatic change of direction in this country," he said. "We're on the brink of Democrats taking back control of the House of Representatives."

Representative Suzan DelBene of Washington State, the chair of the House Democrats campaign arm, told me earlier today that she is confident Democrats will win the House majority but does not expect to have enough races called tonight to know for sure. "I'm a West Coaster so I know our numbers won't come in until closer to 11," DelBene said. "We might have to wait a while later tonight before all the results come in."

Polls in Florida show Ashley Moody, the incumbent Republican senator, with the lead over Angie Nixon in the Florida Senate race. A Times/Siena poll from mid-October showed Moody ahead by six percentage points. Other polls show a similar lead for the senator...

I'm in Bethlehem, Pa., where a hotly contested House race in Pennsylvania's Seventh District has kept poll workers busy with a steady stream of voters all day.

Markwayne Mullin, the homeland security secretary, told reporters at the White House on Tuesday afternoon that he did not send federal immigration agents to polling sites today, which had been a widespread concern among civil rights and immigrant advocacy groups leading up to the election.

I'm at Ohio State University in Columbus, where volunteers are stationed around campus trying to make sure students have cast their ballots in one of this year's most closely watched Senate races. Polls have shown Sherrod Brown, a Democrat and former senator, has some of the best odds in the country of flipping a Republican Senate seat -- but in order to do so, he needs progressives like many of the students on campus to vote...

All eyes are on Texas tonight, where it looks as if the state's record-breaking number of early voters are being followed by robust turnout on Election Day. In Harris County, one of the state's most populous, around 180,000 Election Day votes had been cast as of 3 p.m. Eastern. That number may be below what some had imagined in a year in which hundreds of millions of dollars were spent on the Senate race, but it is not far removed from the 200,000 or so who had voted at the same point in the 2024 presidential election. If current trends continue, overall turnout in the state could exceed 10 million votes, which would be more than what was seen in the last two midterm elections.

For being a purple state, North Carolina has had a relatively quiet midterm year largely because of its sleepy Senate race between former Gov. Roy Cooper, a moderate Democrat, and Michael Whatley, the former Republican National Committee chairman. Consultants of all political stripes and virtually all polls agree that Cooper, who has never lost a race, is heavily favored...

Keep an eye tonight on the Ohio Senate race for what it says, among other things, about the power of the crypto industry. The main crypto super PAC, called Fairshake, spent about $46 million to try and defeat the Democrat in the race, Sherrod Brown. That worked in 2024, when the industry spent tens of millions of dollars against Brown. But there's skepticism even among some of Fairshake's supporters about whether that will work a second time in a much better environment for Democrats. Fairshake and the crypto industry are livid about Senate Democarts' torpedoing a favored crypto policy bill, and the anti-Brown campaign was announced shortly thereafter.

For each of the seats up for election today, the time it takes to project a winner will depend on two factors: how fast the state counts its votes, and how close the race is. Here's how quickly the results came in 2024 for the six competitive Senate races rated as tossups by the Cook Political Report:

Speaking with reporters in frigid temperatures after voting at the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage, Senator Dan Sullivan, a Republican in a tight race, kept his closing message focused on the recent revelations that aides of his Democratic opponent, Mary Peltola, were involved in recruiting a second Dan Sullivan onto the ballot. "We are witnessing the biggest election cheating scandal in the history of the state of Alaska," Sullivan said.

Several voters I've spoken to at polling places around Columbia, S.C., today have brought up a name that is not on the ballot: Senator Lindsey Graham, who died in July. Some of them are extending the good will they felt toward Graham to his sister, Darline, who was appointed to fill out his term and is now the Republican nominee in a close race for the same Senate seat. Others argued that the situation reeked of nepotism...

A small group held signs encouraging voting outside of the Beaches Regional Library polling site in Neptune Beach, Fla. "Trump is still going to be president, but we can vote for a check on his power, his corruption, by voting for Democrats right now," said Melissa Strandhagen, who was holding a sign that read "Constitution over party."

Speaking to CNN just now, Representative Mike Lawler, the Hudson Valley Republican defending his seat, said the problems with vote counting in Westchester County were "very frustrating," but he said anyone who votes today will have their ballots counted. He said that A.D.A. compliant ballot-counting machines were being set up right now at election sites, so ballots can be processed. Ballots that were cast but not accepted this morning, he said, will be transported by police escort to the county board of the elections heaquarters and counted under the observation of lawyers from both parties...

Results will begin coming in at 6 p.m. Eastern time from Indiana and Kentucky, but the pace will pick up with a slew of polls closing at 7 and 8 p.m. Eastern. By 9 p.m. Eastern, polls will be closed in most states. Alaska will be the last state; its polls close at 1 a.m. Eastern.

The board of elections in North Carolina has extended voting hours at several precincts that experienced minor delays this morning because of computer or printer issues that have since been resolved. The release of election results has been pushed back from 7:30 p.m. to at least 8:15 p.m. as a result.

The final tally of spending by Trump super PACs in the 2026 midterms is about $374 million, according to a tally of filings with the Federal Election Commission. That includes about $38 million on the Senate race in Texas; $36 million in Michigan; and $29 million in Ohio. A Trump nonprofit called Securing American Greatness also made $10.5 million in donations to other super PACs through Oct. 14, pushing the total bill for the Trump operation's midterm spending to at least $384 million. President Trump wrote on Truth Social last month that "I would have spent, or will be spending, over 400 Million Dollars by Election Day."

As voters continue to head to the polls, election workers have started to process absentee ballots in Milwaukee. Workers are paired across political affiliations, often with a Republican and a Democrat working together.

Two House races in particular are top-of-mind for people nervous about the rapid spread of artificial intelligence. One of them is in Colorado's Eighth District, where Manny Rutinel, a Democrat with longstanding ties to the so-called effective altruist movement, is trying to beat the Republican incumbent, Gabe Evans...
