Wipro is expanding its AI business with over 2,000 engineers and plans to increase fresher hiring in the second half of FY27. CEO Srinivas Pallia said the company is seeing growing success with outcome-based deals. The firm set up its AI-Native Business & Platforms Unit on April 1 to help.

Wipro is expanding its AI business with a team of more than 2,000 engineers, while also preparing to increase fresher recruitment in the second half of the current financial year. The IT services company is looking to grow its AI-led business as clients seek technology solutions that can deliver measurable results.

Wipro CEO and Managing Director Srinivas Pallia shared details about the company's AI business during its post-earnings press conference. The team includes Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs), who work closely with clients to develop and deploy AI solutions for specific business needs, according to Money Control.

Wipro set up the AI-Native Business & Platforms Unit on April 1 as it looked to expand its AI offerings alongside its traditional IT services. The unit is working on projects across sectors, including banking, healthcare and petrochemicals.

Pallia cited three client projects to explain how the team is putting AI to work - a small language model for a US bank, an AI-led digital initiative at a petrochemical firm in the Middle East, and an AI model for handling enrolment and billing at a US healthcare provider.

Wipro is also developing smaller AI models for specific sectors, including insurance, aviation and wealth management, as well as businesses that rely heavily on physical assets. Pallia said the company is combining these models with AI agents and tools that coordinate their work to help clients bring AI into everyday business operations.

Pallia said the company was seeing growing success with outcome-based deals, in which projects are tied to the business value delivered to clients. Wipro believes this approach can help it grow its AI business without increasing costs at the same pace.

Wipro plans to increase fresher hiring

Alongside its investments in AI, Wipro expects fresher recruitment to pick up in the second half of FY27. The hiring plan comes as IT services companies assess workforce requirements amid changing client demand.

For fresh graduates looking to enter the technology sector, the development is worth watching. IT companies are investing in AI-related services, but the skills required for these roles are also changing. Software engineering knowledge, AI expertise and the ability to work on real-world business problems are becoming increasingly relevant.

Wipro is aiming to bring in roughly 7,500 fresh graduates from campuses each year, but the number joining the company in FY27 may fall a little short of that goal, CHRO Saurabh Govil told NDTV Profit. The company is also putting money into several emerging areas of AI, from computing infrastructure and AI foundry services to physical AI, smart devices and manufacturing-related design services.
