Synopsis

Apple has launched the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M6 chip in India at a starting price of Rs 2,39,900, offering faster graphics, improved on-device AI performance and up to 24 hours of battery life. Pre-orders begin October 28, with sales starting November 6. However, the new model does not have a touchscreen, a feature reportedly planned for redesigned MacBook Pro models expected later this year or in early 2027.

Apple has announced the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with its M6 chip, promising faster graphics, improved on-device AI performance and up to 24 hours of battery life. The laptop starts at Rs 2,39,900 in India, while education pricing begins at Rs 2,27,900.

The launch comes as Apple is also expected to introduce a separate, redesigned MacBook Pro with a touchscreen OLED display. Reports suggest the touchscreen model could arrive later this year or in early 2027, although Apple has not confirmed its plans. The newly announced 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 does not feature a touchscreen.

Price and availability

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 will be available in space black and silver. Pre-orders begin on October 28, with availability starting November 6.

The laptop starts at Rs 2,39,900 for regular customers and Rs 2,27,900 with education savings. It comes with 16GB of unified memory as standard and can be configured with up to 32GB.

M6 brings more CPU and GPU cores

The M6 chip features a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, each with two more cores than the M5. Apple says the additional CPU cores improve performance across tasks such as multitasking, compiling code and creative workflows.

The company claims up to 30% faster graphics performance compared with the M5, alongside a third-generation ray-tracing engine. Apple says the improvements will benefit tasks such as 3D modelling, photo editing and gaming.

For users upgrading from the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1, Apple claims up to 11.7 times faster ray-traced rendering in Blender and up to 2.5 times faster project builds in Xcode. These are Apple’s figures and will depend on the workload.

A bigger focus on AI

The M6 includes Neural Accelerators in each GPU core and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple claims up to 25% faster on-device AI workloads compared with the M5, while the Neural Engine is said to be up to 1.9 times faster.

The chip is designed to handle tasks such as image generation, AI upscaling and running large language models locally. Apple also says the new MacBook Pro delivers up to 13 times faster time to first token—a measure of how quickly an AI model begins responding—than the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1.

Display, battery and connectivity

The laptop retains the 14-inch Liquid Retina XDR display, which offers up to 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness. Buyers can also opt for a nano-texture display, designed to reduce reflections in bright environments.

Apple claims up to 24 hours of battery life, which it says is the longest on a Mac. The laptop also supports fast charging, reaching up to 50% in 30 minutes when paired with a compatible higher-wattage adapter.

Connectivity has been upgraded to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The MacBook Pro supports up to two external displays and includes three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI port, MagSafe 3, an SDXC card slot and a headphone jack.

It also gets a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View, a three-microphone array and a six-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio.

macOS 27 and Siri AI

The new MacBook Pro runs macOS 27 Golden Gate, which brings Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features across the system. Apple says Siri can draw on a user’s personal context to help find information across messages, emails and photos, as well as perform tasks across apps.

Other features include tools to organise Safari tabs, create automations in Shortcuts using a description, and edit photos. Users can also adjust the appearance of Liquid Glass in Settings.

Touchscreen MacBook Pro expected

While the M6 update focuses on performance and connectivity, a more substantial change to the MacBook Pro lineup could be on the way.

According to reports, Apple is working on redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with touch-enabled OLED displays. The touchscreen models are expected to sit above the regular MacBook Pro lineup, though their pricing and launch date remain unconfirmed.
