Synopsis

The artificial intelligence (AI) boom is generating unprecedented wealth for the world’s technology billionaires, whose combined fortunes surged by $845 billion in the first nine months of 2026.
The increase marked the largest wealth gain for the group during the first nine months of any year on record, according to figures from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index cited by The Kobeissi Letter.

The surge pushed the combined wealth of technology billionaires to a record $4.6 trillion, accounting for 36% of the total wealth tracked by the index. Technology billionaires represent only around 20% of its members, highlighting the sector’s disproportionate share of billionaire wealth accumulation.
The gains stand in sharp contrast to the performance of billionaires in other sectors. Those outside technology collectively lost $62 billion over the same period, according to The Kobeissi Letter.
The consumer sector recorded the steepest decline, with billionaire fortunes falling by $279 billion between January and September 2026. The communications sector also saw substantial losses, with wealth declining by $92 billion.
Live Events
Among the sectors that recorded gains, financial billionaires added $267 billion to their combined fortunes, while those in industrials gained $65 billion. Energy billionaires saw their wealth increase by $24 billion, while fortunes in materials rose by $3 billion.
Other sectors recorded declines. Billionaire wealth in healthcare fell by $33 billion, while real estate fortunes dropped by $11 billion. The utilities sector recorded a comparatively modest decline of $5 billion.
The geographical concentration of wealth gains was equally striking. Americans accounted for 94% of the total net wealth gains recorded by the Bloomberg Billionaires Index in the first nine months of 2026, according to the figures cited by The Kobeissi Letter.
That dominance was reflected in the global wealth rankings. Since September 10, all 10 of the world’s richest individuals have been American, marking the first time this has occurred since data collection began in 2012, The Kobeissi Letter reported.
