Apple Inc posted record revenue in India in the September quarter, powered by strong iPhone upgrades and all-time high sales of Mac computers and services, signalling a broadening of its business beyond the traditional mainstay of smartphones.

The US-based company's robust quarterly show underscores its monetisation of an expanding consumer base in India across devices and digital services, even as competition intensifies in the world's second-largest smartphone market where sales have fallen nearly 20% due to multiple rounds of price hikes this year.

Speaking to analysts after Apple's July-September earnings Tuesday, newly appointed CEO John Ternus said the company scored September quarter revenue records in both developed and emerging markets, including an all-time high in India. He didn't disclose revenue figures or growth rate for India.

"We also set a September quarter record for upgraders worldwide as well as in the US, mainland China and India, helping to deliver our best fiscal year ever for upgraders globally," said Ternus. Apple also achieved September quarter records in the Americas, Europe, Greater China, and the rest of Asia-Pacific.

Chief financial officer Kevan Parekh said Apple's active installed base of iPhones has hit an all-time high, with the device recording its best-ever year for upgrades globally and in several markets, including the US, mainland China, India and Japan. Citing a recent Worldpanel survey, he said the iPhone was the top-selling smartphone model in the US, urban China, India, the UK, Germany, Australia and Japan.

Parekh also flagged record revenues from Mac computers and services in India, highlighting the growing contribution of non-iPhone businesses. "We saw double-digit growth in both developed and emerging markets (for Mac), with all-time records in markets like India and Southeast Asia," he said. Apple also posted revenue records in services in most of the regions it tracks, including emerging markets such as Latin America and India.

Market tracker Counterpoint Research said the newly launched iPhone 18 Pro series got off to a strong start in India, with initial sales nearly 20% higher year-on-year than those of the iPhone 17 Pro series.

Demand for the iPhone 17 lineup also remained healthy, despite pricing adjustments across Apple's portfolio amid rising memory and component costs.
