Chennai Super Kings head coach Zaheer Khan confirmed Mohit Sharma as the team's new bowling coach for IPL 2027. Zaheer also teased a possible return for Albie Morkel in a coaching role. The franchise is overhauling its support staff after parting ways with Michael Hussey before the November 15 retention deadline.
Chennai Super Kings head coach Zaheer Khan has confirmed the appointment of former India fast bowler Mohit Sharma as the franchise's bowling coach for IPL 2027, while dropping a hint about a possible return for former CSK all-rounder Albie Morkel in a coaching role.
The five-time champions are overhauling their support staff following a disappointing run in recent seasons, with coach Zaheer given the freedom to assemble his own coaching team after replacing Stephen Fleming as head coach. The franchise has also confirmed the appointment of former England off-spinner Gareth Batty as an assistant coach, with the new-look backroom staff taking shape ahead of the retention deadline on November 15.
Mohit's appointment was highlighted during Zaheer's visit to Chennai, where the new head coach interacted with the franchise's mascot, Leo, in a promotional video. The announcement marks a return to familiar territory for the 38-year-old, who began his IPL career with CSK in 2013.
Mohit represented Chennai between 2013 and 2015 before returning for another stint in 2019. He subsequently enjoyed a successful run with Gujarat Titans, particularly in 2023, when he played a key role in their run to the final. His last IPL appearance came for Delhi Capitals, and he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in December 2025.
The former India pacer will replace Eric Simons, who served as CSK's bowling coach under Fleming. Mohit brings extensive IPL experience to the role, having played 120 matches and taken 134 wickets in the tournament. His familiarity with the franchise could prove valuable as CSK look to rebuild their bowling unit and return to contention.
ALBIE MORKEL RETURNS?
Zaheer also fuelled speculation about a possible return for Morkel, who could be considered for a batting-related role. The South African played for CSK between 2008 and 2013 and was an important member of the side during its successful years. However, a formal appointment for Morkel has not been confirmed.
Morkel has remained associated with the Super Kings family through its other franchises. He recently took over as head coach of Joburg Super Kings in South Africa's SA20 after Fleming stepped down from the role. His experience as a former international all-rounder and his familiarity with the franchise could make him a candidate for a role in Chennai's revamped coaching structure.
Meanwhile, CSK have parted ways with long-serving batting coach Michael Hussey as part of the restructuring. Hussey had been associated with the franchise as a player and coach for several years, taking over as batting coach in 2018. His departure follows the exit of Simons and fielding coach James Foster, who have joined Fleming's England Test coaching set-up.
Batty's arrival adds further experience to Zaheer's team. The former England international recently stepped down as Surrey's head coach to take up an IPL role with CSK. His appointment comes as the franchise reshapes its coaching structure after missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons.
With the November 15 retention deadline approaching, Zaheer and the CSK management will also have to settle their squad plans before the auction. The coaching changes signal a fresh start for the franchise as it looks to combine familiar faces with new ideas in its bid to challenge for a sixth IPL title.
