Former Australia batter Mike Hussey will take on an expanded role as a consultant coach for the national team. He will help prepare the squad for the 2027 Ashes and World Cup. "I am extremely excited about being a part of the team," Hussey said about his new responsibilities.
Former Australia batter Mike Hussey will take on an expanded role with the national team, serving as a consultant coach ahead of the 2027 Ashes and ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. He will also work as a T20 advisor as Australia prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next T20 World Cup cycle.
Hussey's appointment comes with Australia facing a packed international calendar across formats over the next two years. He will provide coaching assistance during the upcoming T20I series against England and work with the team ahead of the Test series against New Zealand, before taking on broader responsibilities for the major tournaments in 2027 and 2028.
In a statement released by Cricket Australia, Hussey said he was looking forward to becoming a more involved part of the national setup. He also expressed his hope of contributing to a team that has enjoyed considerable success in recent years.
"I am extremely excited about being a part of the team in a more formal and meaningful role in the coming years," Hussey said.
Cricket Australia General Manager of National Teams Ben Oliver welcomed the expanded arrangement, highlighting Hussey's international experience and understanding of the domestic game. Head coach Andrew McDonald also backed the appointment, pointing to the former batter's knowledge across formats and his ability to complement the existing coaching group.
"We are thrilled to have Mike expand his role with the team. Mike brings substantial international experience having represented Australia more than 300 times across his celebrated playing career," Oliver said.
HUSSEY TO BRING T20 EXPERTISE
Hussey's advisory responsibilities in the shortest format will cover campaign planning, opposition analysis, player scouting and performance support. With Australia's Test commitments expected to keep the coaching staff occupied over the coming months, his role will provide additional focus on the T20 setup as the team builds towards the Los Angeles Olympics and the 2028 T20 World Cup.
The former left-hander played more than 300 international matches for Australia across formats and earned the nickname 'Mr Cricket' during his playing career. Since retiring, he has built a coaching portfolio spanning international cricket, the IPL and The Hundred. He was also part of England's coaching setup during their 2022 T20 World Cup triumph.
Hussey has previously worked with the Australian team during recent summers, making the expanded position a continuation of an existing association. McDonald said his experience as both a player and coach would be valuable to the group, while also praising his personal qualities.
Hussey will begin his expanded role during Australia's T20I series against England later this month.
