The government approved a major overhaul of the Agnipath recruitment scheme on Wednesday, November 4. Agniveers not selected for regular service after four years now get two extra years of engagement. This change creates a pathway for willing soldiers to join the Armed Forces permanently, based on merit and selection criteria.

The government has approved a major overhaul of the Agnipath recruitment scheme, giving Agniveers who are not selected for regular service after their initial four-year tenure an additional two years of engagement, followed by an opportunity to join the Armed Forces as regular soldiers.

The decision, approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday (November 4, 2026) on the recommendations of the three services, creates a pathway for the eventual absorption of all willing Agniveers, subject to merit and prescribed selection criteria.
