The White House on Wednesday posted a photograph of US President Donald Trump on X with the message, "PSA: Trump is still your president," following the Democratic Party's sweeping gains in the November 3 midterm elections. Thank you for your attention to this matter. https://t.co/Q1ZGYM7idV -- The White House (@WhiteHouse) November 4, 2026 The post, which showed Trump leaning over the Resolute Desk, came after Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress, ending the Republican Party's hold on the House of Representatives and the Senate. The results are expected to give Democrats greater influence over legislation and increase their ability to scrutinise the administration during the final two years of Trump's presidency.
The White House post concluded with the line, "Thank you for your attention to this matter," a phrase frequently used by Trump in his social media communications. Trump has acknowledged the scale of the Democratic victory, saying he was surprised by the results. "I'm a little bit surprised. I thought they'd do better," he told Fox News. He also suggested that the Iran war had contributed to the Republican losses, while maintaining that his administration's actions against Tehran were important. "I think part of it was Iran, but at the same time, people understood the importance of what I have done with Iran.
Historically, it will be much more important than this evening because you can't let the number one state sponsor of terror have a nuclear weapon," Trump said. JD Vance blames Iran war for Republican defeat Vice President JD Vance has also weighed in, identifying the war with Iran as the central reason behind the party's poor performance. "The reason we lost is the war," Vance wrote in a lengthy post on X. Referring to Trump's remarks, he added, "The president himself said so last night." Vance argued that Republicans needed to acknowledge the political cost of the conflict, saying, "If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next six years was worth it, then do so.
Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there." He said he remained "hopeful" about the party's future and urged supporters to channel their frustration into electing Republicans who shared their views. Democrats make gains across states Democrats recorded major victories in several traditionally Republican-leaning states, including Texas, Kansas, Ohio and South Carolina. In Maine, former logger Troy Jackson defeated Republican Senator Susan Collins, while Adam Hamilton became the first Democrat elected to the Senate from Kansas since 1932.
In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed became the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. Democrats also won the Texas governor's race, ending decades of Republican control, while former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms won Georgia's governorship, becoming the state's first Black woman governor. Republicans secured some victories in Florida, where Trump-backed Byron Donalds won the governor's race and Ashley Moody retained her Senate seat.
