New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday witnessed a spectacular display of India's air power as Rafale, Sukhoi, Mirage 2000 and Tejas fighter jets roared over the Ganga during the Indian Air Force's 'Wings over Ganges' air show at Namo Ghat in Varanasi.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath accompanied Modi on the concluding day of the three-day event commemorating the IAF's 94th anniversary.
The hour-long spectacle featured frontline fighter aircraft, including the MiG-29 and Jaguar, besides transport aircraft and helicopters, showcasing the IAF's operational capabilities.
A major attraction was the Kashi formation, in which three aircraft flew in a V formation, displaying the Tricolour. Mi-17 helicopters carrying the national flag participated in the Omkar formation.
The Surya Kiran aerobatic team demonstrated precision flying and coordinated manoeuvres, while the Sarang helicopter display team thrilled spectators with aerial stunts. The indigenous Tejas fighter and Prachand light combat helicopter were among the aircraft featured.
Thousands gathered along the ghats to witness the display, waving national flags and raising slogans of "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" and "Vande Mataram" as fighter jets thundered over the river.
Earlier, BJP workers and residents lined the route from the Police Lines to Namo Ghat to welcome the Prime Minister, showering rose petals and organising cultural performances. Modi acknowledged the cheering crowds from his vehicle.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister inaugurated a garment manufacturing unit of Arvind Ltd in the Mirzamurad area of Varanasi and interacted with around 300 women.
Officials said the facility would generate employment, particularly for women, strengthen the region's textile manufacturing sector and connect locally manufactured garments with international markets.
Modi arrived in Varanasi on Sunday morning and travelled by helicopter to Mirzamurad before proceeding to Namo Ghat for the air show.
