ANANTAPUR: Telugu Desam (TD) high command has reportedly cleared the candidature of Dharmavaram constituency in-charge Paritala Sreeram for the Nallacheruvu Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) seat in Kadiri constituency. This positions him as the TD candidate for Sri Sathya Sai Zilla Parishad chairperson's post.
Sreeram filed his nomination for the Nallacheruvu ZPTC seat on Friday in the presence of Kadiri MLA Kandikunta Venkata Prasad and other leaders.
Sources said most ZPTC seats in Rapthadu and Dharmavaram are reserved, following which MLA K. Venkata Prasad offered Sreeram the opportunity to contest from Nallacheruvu mandal. Telugu Desam leadership has reportedly approved his entry into the rural local body elections.
Sreeram is the son of slain TD leader Paritala Ravindra and former minister Paritala Sunitha. He has been active in the party's affairs in Dharmavaram. However, the Dharmavaram assembly constituency had been allotted to the BJP in the last assembly general elections. Party nominee Satyakumar Yadav won the seat and went on to become the Health minister.
Friday being the last day for filing nominations, tension prevailed in several parts of Anantapur and Sri Sathya Sai districts on the last day of filing nominations for the ZPTC and Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) polls.
Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse TD and YSRC groups that pelted stones at each other in Peddavadugur and Yellanur mandals.
Anantapur SP P. Jagadish said tight security had been provided at every mandal headquarters to prevent untoward incidents during the nomination process. Police personnel escorted to nomination centres candidates who feared threats from rivals.
ZPTC and MPTC elections in Andhra Pradesh are scheduled on November 3. Counting of votes will be on November 5. The final list of contesting candidates is expected after scrutiny and withdrawal of nominations.
