Elon Musk's X told the Delhi High Court on November 6 that takedown notices against IFF and SFLC.in were fake. The groups got emails claiming Delhi Police wanted their accounts removed. X said, "On an internal investigation, the email appears to be fake," and they filed a police complaint.

Elon Musk's X (formerly Twitter) in the Delhi High Court on November 6 said that the takedown orders for accounts of prominent civil society groups such as Internet Freedom Foundation and SFLC.in were fake.

On November 3, the two civil society groups shared screenshots of takedown order intimation emails that they received from X, stating that the social media platform had received these orders from Delhi Police. The emails also included the purported Delhi Police email ID from which these takedown orders were sent.

After that, SFLC.in wrote to the specific email address, which bounced back, indicating that the email address either did not exist or had been deactivated since the purported takedown orders were sent.

Following that, due to the lack of any official denial or confirmation by the Delhi Police on the notices, IFF and SFLC.in filed a case at the Delhi High Court.

Moneycontrol had also reached out to Delhi Police with detailed queries on the matter.

"X submitted that, on an internal investigation, the email appears to be fake, and that it has filed a complaint with the Delhi Police. X stated that it is not likely to take any action at this stage," IFF said. Advocate Akhil Sibal appeared for both IFF and SFLC.

"On Mr Sibal’s submission, the Court recorded X’s statement and disposed of the petitions in these terms, with liberty to approach the Court afresh if any action is taken," the body further said.

The purported takedown notice listed the account-level URLs of IFF, SFLC.in and GeoBlockedIndia, along with several posts published by these accounts and others.

The email identified the Special Commissioner of Police (Crime), Delhi Police, as the "reporter" of the notice.

Referring specifically to two of the listed URLs, Delhi Police said in the notice, "These two posts are defamatory towards the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh under Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS)."
