BJP women MPs met President Droupadi Murmu on October 13, 2026, seeking the suspension of Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam. They raised concerns over sexual harassment allegations at JNU. "The President has assured us that she will have the matter investigated," said BJP Mahila Morcha president Roop Kumari Choudhary after meeting.

A delegation of 15 MPs met the President and requested her to ensure that the Congress MP, who continues to be a member of the Lok Sabha, was removed from the House

BJP women MPs on Tuesday (October 13, 2026) met President Droupadi Murmu and sought her intervention for the suspension of Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from the Lok Sabha over allegations of sexual harassment at Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, BJP Mahila Morcha president Roop Kumari Choudhary said the delegation also urged President Murmu to ensure the safety of the women who had filed complaints against the MP -- also a professor at JNU.

Ms. Choudhary said President Murmu had assured the delegation that she would have the matter investigated after they sought action against Mr. Akoijam.

She said a delegation of 15 MPs met the President and requested her to ensure that the Congress MP, who continues to be a member of the Lok Sabha, was removed from the House. The delegation also sought protection for the complainants.

"The President has assured us that she will have the matter investigated and ensure appropriate action is taken," Ms. Choudhary said.

"The incident that took place at JNU involved Professor Bimol Akoijam, a Congress MP from Manipur," she said, adding that 11 young women had submitted a written complaint detailing the alleged misconduct.

"An inquiry was initiated by a committee, and the internal committee found him guilty. He was also dismissed from his position there," she said.

Mr. Choudhary criticised Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sonia Gandhi for not speaking out on the issue, alleging that they had maintained silence despite their stated commitment to women's dignity.

"Priyanka Gandhi's slogan, 'Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon' (I am a girl, I can fight), is also limited to mere words," she said.

She claimed that the complainants were apprehensive because Akoijam was an influential Congress leader who had the party's support.

"The young women who filed the complaint are also living in fear," she said, adding that the delegation had requested the President to ensure their full protection and safety.

"We came today to appeal to and request the President to ensure that the person who continues to be a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha is also dismissed from the House," she said.

The delegation was led by BJP MP D. Purandeswari and included Mr. Choudhary, Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj and others.

The meeting comes a day after the BJP Mahila Morcha staged protests outside the Congress headquarters in Delhi and several places in Himachal Pradesh, demanding that the party expel Mr. Akoijam, the MP from Inner Manipur.

Union Women and Child Development Minister Annpurna Devi, along with several women MPs and workers of the BJP, participated in Monday's (October 12, 2026) protest in Delhi.

The JNU dismissed Mr. Akoijam last week after an inquiry into the sexual harassment allegations against him found him guilty. He was a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under JNU's School of Social Sciences.

According to reports, at least 11 female students had filed sexual harassment complaints against the professor in May 2026. The complaints alleged that Akoijam invited students to his campus residence under the pretext of meetings or gatherings and attempted to exploit them sexually.

Some students had also alleged that he used to make obscene and inappropriate remarks in class.
