Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy in Ohio's gubernatorial election, becoming the state's first Democratic governor in 15 years. Ramaswamy faced Acton, a physician and former director of the Ohio Department of Health, who became a familiar face during the state's response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The campaign saw more than $100 million in spending, with Ramaswamy and his Republican allies significantly outspending the Democratic side. Acton focused her campaign on affordability, healthcare and public services, while Ramaswamy promised tax cuts, lower regulations and an expansion of economic opportunities in the state.

Who is Vivek Ramaswamy? Born on August 9, 1985, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Indian immigrant parents from Kerala, Ramaswamy is a biotech entrepreneur, author and Republican politician. His parents, both Malayali Hindus, moved to the United States before he was born. He graduated from Harvard University with a degree in biology and later earned a law degree from Yale University. He made his fortune in the pharmaceutical industry after founding Roivant Sciences in 2014, a biotechnology company focused on developing medicines. Ramaswamy subsequently became known in conservative political circles for his criticism of what he described as corporate America's growing focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) policies.

He also wrote books challenging what he called the influence of progressive ideology in American institutions. His entry into electoral politics came in 2023, when he launched a campaign for the Republican presidential nomination ahead of the 2024 election. Although he eventually dropped out after the Iowa caucuses and endorsed Trump, his campaign made him a nationally recognised figure within the Republican Party. Ramaswamy's political rise has been closely linked to his relationship with Trump. During the 2024 Republican presidential primaries, he positioned himself as a strong supporter of Trump's political agenda, even as the two competed for the party's nomination.

After withdrawing from the presidential race in January 2024, Ramaswamy endorsed Trump and became part of his wider political circle. Following Trump's return to the White House in January 2025, Ramaswamy was associated with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative involving billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk that sought to reduce federal government spending and restructure parts of the administration. He left the initiative on Inauguration Day to focus on his Ohio gubernatorial campaign. Trump subsequently endorsed Ramaswamy in the governor's race, describing him as a candidate who would work to advance his political and economic agenda.

The endorsement helped consolidate Republican support behind Ramaswamy ahead of the primary. Why was Ohio Governor's race important? The Ohio contest carried significance beyond the state's political leadership. Ramaswamy's victory would have made him the first Indian American to become governor of Ohio, marking a milestone for the Indian-American community in US politics. It would also have strengthened Trump's political influence in a state that has consistently backed Republican presidential candidates in recent elections. Trump won Ohio three times, including by more than 11 percentage points in 2024.

For Ramaswamy, a governorship would have offered an opportunity to move beyond his presidential campaign and establish himself as an elected Republican leader with an executive role. It could also have strengthened his position within the party ahead of the 2028 presidential election. The race was particularly important because Ohio has been governed by Republicans for years. A victory for Democratic candidate Amy Acton, meanwhile, would have ended the party's two-decade wait to win the governor's office and made her the state's first woman governor.
