Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said India will now produce tunnel boring machines under Aatmanirbhar Bharat. The country previously relied on imports for these large machines. Now, local facilities will build units exceeding 16 metres in diameter. These machines are vital for building tunnels for railway, highway and power infrastructure projects.
The State is set to play a major role in self-sufficiency in the development of indigenous technology of tunnel boring machine (TBM), as a manufacturing facility is being set up through the Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
In a press release issued by the Southern Railway, the Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said as the country is making significant strides towards self-reliance in TBM technology by strengthening the indigenous manufacturing capabilities to meet the growing demands of the infrastructure sector, the State plays an important role in this progress, with manufacturing facilities contributing to the development of indigenous TBM technology.
Mr. Vaishnaw said previously the country relied on imports of TBMs with diameters of 8 metres and 15 metres but today the country is set to manufacture machines exceeding 16 metres in diameter. TBMs play a crucial role in the construction of tunnels for railway, highway and power infrastructure projects.
