Journalist Tarun Tejpal's bid to have his prison sentence suspended failed on Friday after the Supreme Court declined to grant him relief. The former Tehelka editor was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a junior colleague in a hotel lift during a magazine event in Goa in 2013.
A bench of Justices M.M. Sundresh and Prasanna B. Varale heard arguments from lawyers for Tejpal and the Goa government before saying it was not inclined to suspend the sentence.
On August 6, the Bombay High Court overturned Tejpal's acquittal by a Goa trial court five years earlier, convicted him of rape and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
Tejpal, 62, moved the Supreme Court on August 20 to challenge the high court verdict. He has claimed he was a victim of political vendetta.
