India slammed the UN on Tuesday after experts flagged a crackdown on protests. Barkha Tamrakar said, "Human rights not to be used as an instrument of political pressure or selective country targeting." She told the committee that India wants transparency and cooperation instead of using human rights to target countries.
India has said that human rights must not be used to exert political pressure or selectively target countries. It also called for accountability, transparency and cooperation in tackling enforced disappearances at the United Nations General Assembly's Third Committee.
On Tuesday, more than 20 UN human rights experts in Geneva expressed alarm over what they described as a "repeatedly heavy-handed police response" to peaceful youth-led demonstrations in the national capital.
Barkha Tamrakar, deputy secretary, ministry of external affairs, said, "India engages with international human rights mechanisms, but such engagement must be based on dialogue, consultation, cooperation with non-selectivity and transparency as guiding principles."
"Human rights not to be used as an instrument of political pressure or selective country targeting," she said in her statement.
Tamrakar made the statement on India's behalf at the UN General Assembly's Third Committee on Tuesday. She was speaking during a discussion on the agenda item concerning the 'Working Group on Enforced Disappearances'.
She stressed that human rights should not become a tool for political pressure or the selective targeting of countries.
"We call on delegations to cite the report faithfully, not to inflate a humanitarian communication into a verdict," Tamrakar said.
