Schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Palnadu will remain closed on November 2 as Cyclone Murasu approaches. The storm intensified on November 1 and is expected to hit the Andhra Pradesh coast on November 3. Authorities issued weather alerts and asked residents to stay safe as heavy rainfall is expected.

Schools and colleges in Chennai and Tiruvallur will remain closed on November 2, 2026, as a precautionary measure amid forecasts of heavy rainfall associated with Cyclone Murasu. The district administrations announced the holiday after the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) issued an orange alert for both districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also forecast intense rainfall across several northern Tamil Nadu districts over the next two days as the cyclone advances towards the Andhra Pradesh coast.

Cyclone Murasu developed after a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm on Sunday, November 1. According to the IMD, the system is expected to make landfall on the morning of November 3 along the Andhra Pradesh coast, between Nellore and Narsapur. The storm is forecast to bring sustained wind speeds of 100 to 110 kmph, with gusts reaching 120 kmph. The approaching cyclone has prompted authorities in the affected regions to issue weather warnings and take precautionary measures to minimise risks to residents.

In Andhra Pradesh, Palnadu District Collector Kritika Shukla announced a holiday for government and private schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centres in the district due to the approaching cyclone. In a press release issued on Sunday, the district administration said it had made the necessary arrangements to respond to the potential impact of Cyclone Murasu.

Meanwhile, weather alerts have also been issued for parts of Telangana. An orange alert has been announced for six districts, while five other districts have been placed under a yellow alert for Monday, November 2. Residents in the affected areas have been advised to remain alert to changing weather conditions and follow instructions issued by the local administration.

The IMD's forecast of heavy rainfall across northern Tamil Nadu, combined with the cyclone's expected approach towards Andhra Pradesh, has led authorities to take preventive steps in vulnerable districts. Students and parents should check announcements issued by their respective district administrations and educational institutions for updates on school and college closures.
