Chennai and North Tamil Nadu districts brace for heavy rain as Cyclone Murasu moves toward the South Andhra Pradesh coast. The weather office warned of continuous heavy rainfall for the next 24 hours. V R Durai said, "People in northern Tamil Nadu must remain on high alert tonight" as winds peak.
Chennai: The weather office on Monday warned of heavy rain for the next 24 hours, indicating that Chennai and Thiruvallur districts remain under the threat of continuous heavy to very heavy rainfall as Cyclone 'Murasu' tracks towards the South Andhra Pradesh coast.
Heavy rainfall is expected to lash Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Vellore, and the Nilgiris districts. The forecast notes that the intensity of the precipitation will gradually subside only after the storm completely crosses the coast.
People in northern Tamil Nadu must remain on high alert tonight as severe Cyclone Murasu closes in on the Andhra Pradesh coast, warned Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, Director, V R Durai.
While the core of the severe storm tracks northwestward to make a midnight landfall between Nellore and Narsapur, Durai cautioned that its outer rain bands will continue to lash Chennai and Thiruvallur with heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.
Though major sea surges are unlikely, he told reporters here that fishermen have been warned against venturing into the north coastal Tamil Nadu waters due to rough seas and squally winds peaking at 80 km/h.
