The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission to decide by Thursday on extending the nomination deadline for urban local body polls. The court said the YSRCP made out a prima facie case that many candidates got stopped from filing papers due to law and order issues.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (APSEC) to decide, by Thursday, on the plea of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) seeking an extension of the deadline for filing nominations in the elections to Urban Local Bodies, wherever it finds that candidates could not file their papers because of the law and order situation.

It directed the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission not to publish the final list of candidates for upcoming urban local body polls in the state until October 26. The final list was scheduled to be published today. A vacation bench of Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana said that YSRCP has "made out prima facie case" that several of its candidates were stopped from filing nomination papers for polls to around 100 urban local bodies.

The bench asked the SEC to examine the representations filed by the YSRCP and its candidates, along with documentary and electronic evidence, including video clips, and to take a decision by October 22, 2026.
