Pakistan’s Meteorological Department (PMD) reported a magnitude 5.9 earthquake in Balochistan, saying it occurred at 10:07 am local time at a depth of 25 kilometres. The PMD placed its epicentre 48 kilometres northwest of Khuzdar and said initial reports indicated no loss of life or property.

The NCS and PMD reports differ in magnitude, time and depth. The available information does not establish whether they refer to the same event.

Pakistan lies in an active seismic region influenced by the Indian, Eurasian and Arabian tectonic plates. Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan are among the regions vulnerable to earthquakes.

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Pakistan in 2005, killing more than 74,000 people.
