The INDIA bloc has postponed its planned "public impeachment" of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to Saturday, October 31, due to rain in Delhi. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi announced the decision on Friday and said the opposition alliance would also hold a march and rally on Sunday to protest alleged electoral irregularities.
"By consensus we have decided to postpone today's programme to tomorrow at the same time," Rahul said at a joint press conference with INDIA bloc leaders outside Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's residence at 10, Rajaji Marg in New Delhi.
Rahul said a "Chalo Dilli" march and rally would be held on Sunday.
"Both programmes are about the demolition of democracy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and his crew," the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha alleged.
He also accused the Union home minister of trying to prevent people from reaching the national capital.
"Our party people and common people are being stopped. You watch what happens at Ramlila Maidan and you will understand what is happening in the country. There is huge anger and pain because millions are being disenfranchised," he said.
Rahul invited everyone who wanted to protect the Constitution to join the march and rally.
Echoing similar sentiments, Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien said the INDIA bloc was united on the issue and would fight together.
INDIA bloc leaders met on Thursday to finalise the proceedings for the symbolic protest against alleged "vote chori", which will take place at Kharge's residence.
According to sources, former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar will chair the INDIA bloc's "public impeachment" of Gyanesh Kumar. Kharge will move the 'motion' to impeach the chief election commissioner, while Rahul will deliver the concluding remarks before the 'motion' is passed.
Besides Kharge and Rahul, one representative from each party is likely to speak at the event.
The Congress on Tuesday claimed it had been denied permission to hold the "public impeachment" of the chief election commissioner. The party also accused the government of trying to silence the voice of common people after "destroying" the electoral system.
The Congress and other opposition parties have demanded Kumar's resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra said the opposition's primary objective was to highlight alleged irregularities in the electoral roll revision process and hold the chief election commissioner accountable.
"What is important that the SIR process, which has been an unfair vote manipulation process, is called out and the person who is at the helm of this Gyanesh Kumar backed by Modi and Shah have to be called out, and that's where all the parties are united and we are having this tomorrow... due to inclement weather we had to postpone it today. We are having it tomorrow at 2.30."
