Puducherry/Yanam: Precautionary measures undertaken by Puducherry district administration prevented loss of life in the region when Cyclone Arnab crossed the coast near Yanam on Wednesday morning. Godavari river swelled and sea level rose by 1-2m, causing seawater to breach coastal boundaries and submerge low-lying areas across Yanam, 800km from Puducherry headquarters. More than 101 ha of paddy crops were destroyed in the cyclone. More than 500 trees, some about 100 years old, were uprooted, and 35 high-tension and 25 low-tension electric poles fell over. Two transformers were damaged, and 15km of electric lines were damaged. Outages persisted after power supply was shut down at 4pm on Tuesday as a precautionary measure.
