Shahid Kapoor and Mira Rajput recall their seven-hour first meeting, Udta Punjab memories and her father's shocked reaction to his green-haired look.
Shahid Kapoor and Mira Rajput revisited the early days of their relationship on the latest episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show, sharing everything from their unexpectedly long first conversation to the actor's rather unusual attempt at impressing Mira with a pair of glow-in-the-dark shoes.
The couple appeared on the show alongside Ishaan Khatter, with Shahid also recalling the moment his future father-in-law first saw him sporting green hair for Udta Punjab. According to the actor, the look left him visibly stunned.
Mira Rajput Recalls Their Seven-Hour First Conversation
Mira said Shahid turned out to be good company when they met for the first time, although one of his requests left her thoroughly confused.
"He is very good company. After 2-3 hours, he asked me to take out my phone and take a picture of his shoes. I thought how weird. We were meeting for the first time, and he wanted me to take a photo of his shoes," she recalled.
Mira said Shahid then asked her to switch on the flash before proudly explaining what made the footwear special.
"I showed him the picture, asking what was so great about it. He said his shoes glowed in the dark. I kept wondering what was so great about it," she added.
Shahid then explained the context behind the shoes.
"When we met for the first time, Mira was 20, and I was 34. When we sat down together, I kept thinking if our wavelengths would ever match. After that, seven hours passed by, and we didn't realise," he said.
He added that the shoes were useful during the early days of paparazzi culture because they absorbed flash.
"Those shoes absorbed all the light if they used flash, so the entire picture was dark. Only the shoes were seen. I forgot she had no connection to films and wouldn't get it, and I kept flaunting those shoes."
Shahid Says Mira's Father 'Froze' Seeing His Green Hair
Shahid also recalled visiting Mira's Delhi home while he was filming Udta Punjab and still had Tommy Singh's green-haired look.
"The first time I went to Delhi to see her house, her father opened the door. I had green hair. When my father-in-law opened the door, he froze for a while, looking at me," Shahid said.
Calling Mira's father a "very disciplined man, an engineer, an IITian, and an absolutely amazing human being," Shahid added, "When he saw me in Tommy Singh's look, he froze and wondered if he was giving his daughter to me. I will never forget his expression."
Mira Was 'Stressed' After Watching Udta Punjab
Shahid said Mira had another surprise waiting after they got married, when she watched Udta Punjab with him in the edit room.
"After the film ended, she was sitting on the other end of the sofa. She was very stressed seeing that character and wondered who she had married," he recalled.
When Kapil Sharma joked about what Mira might have thought after Kabir Singh, Shahid revealed, "She was the one who convinced me to do Kabir Singh."
Mira added that she had watched only a handful of Shahid's films before their marriage.
"I had seen and loved Chup Chup Ke, and Jab We Met is one of my favorites. I saw Haider 2-3 weeks before I met him, and my parents knew the context - that we were going to meet, so they got scared," she said.
Shahid and Mira married in 2015. They welcomed daughter Misha in 2016 and son Zayn in 2018.
