Pyaar Ke Side Effects completed 20 years on September 16. Rahul Bose said the film remains a special part of his career. He praised his co-star, noting, “She was a DELIGHT to work with.” The actor shared how the team collaborated to shape the characters, making the romantic comedy memorable.
Pyaar Ke Side Effects (2006) completed 20 years on September 16 this year. The film was a one-of-a-kind romantic comedy for Bollywood. Director Saket Chaudhary's execution was unique, the plot and characters were relatable, and the humour was refreshingly different. Rahul Bose was highly entertaining in the lead role, while Mallika Sherawat, who was largely being typecast in bold roles until then, got an opportunity to showcase a different side of her acting abilities. Moreover, Pritam's soulful and peppy music continues to be popular even today. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Rahul Bose went down memory lane and shared fond memories of working on Pyaar Ke Side Effects.
20 years of Pyaar Ke Side Effects EXCLUSIVE: Rahul Bose reveals how Mallika Sherawat’s casting CHANGED the film: “She was a DELIGHT to work with”; added, “My friends used to send me videos from theatres and would tell me, ‘Dekho kitne log hass rahe hain’”
When asked whether it was one of the most special films of his career, Rahul Bose replied, “Yes, definitely. When Saket decided to cast Mallika, he and I kept discussing how we could now change the dialogues and her character. After all, he was a South Mumbai ka ladka while she was a Punjaban from Delhi. She doesn’t know big English words. She drinks a lot. All those things happened once he cast Mallika. So, we were very, very collaborative and great friends throughout the making of the film. Hence, bahut maza aaya.”
He added, “Mallika was a delight to work with. She was so much fun and she worked really hard. And she’s good in that film.”
One of the film's most entertaining aspects was how its protagonist, Sid (Rahul Bose), regularly broke the fourth wall and interacted directly with the audience. Rahul Bose remarked, “I think it’s definitely one of my best pieces of work. I had broken the fourth wall to some extent in my films English, August (1994) and Mumbai Matinee (2003) as well. I am very used to breaking the fourth wall on stage as well. I had done about 14 plays on stage. But this was written in such a clever way.”
Rahul Bose also recalled how audiences would erupt with laughter while watching the film in cinemas. He revealed, “My friends and well-wishers used to send me videos from cinema halls. They would tell me, ‘Dekho kitne log hass rahe hain’ or ‘Mera pati bol raha hai ki main aisi hoon’ or ‘Meri patni bol rahi hain ki main aisa hoon’. So, it struck a chord.”
Interestingly, Bollywood has recently witnessed a trend of reviving popular films with sequels after a gap of two decades or more, as seen with Gadar 2 (2023) and Border 2 (2026). This naturally raises the question of whether Pyaar Ke Side Effects could also get a sequel; audiences would love to know what Sid (Rahul Bose) and Trisha (Mallika Sherawat) are up to 20 years later.
When we floated the idea of Pyaar Ke Side Effects 2, Rahul Bose came up with a hilarious response. He quipped, “If they wait any longer, it’ll be called ‘Maut Ke Side Effects’!”
