SS Rajamouli has offered a major update on Varanasi and revealed that the film is a father-son story and, at the same time, delves into the romantic relationship between Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra's characters. The adventure film will travel through Antarctica, Africa and Varanasi and will touch upon mythology.
"Sometimes I don't, because the words don't do justice to the scope of the film. That's the reason why I released a glimpse of what Varanasi is to be. Instead of putting any words to it, we made a video which we released last year. It takes the audience through the world of Varanasi, what they're going to experience, without telling them anything," SS Rajamouli said at an event in Brazil.
"It is an adventure which travels through different worlds. It travels through Antarctica, through Africa, through the city of Varanasi, in different time zones. It travels into the time of mythology, where you see giants, Gods, and all that stuff. But everything is driven by the emotion of a father and son, and the emotion of a man and a woman...the love between them. That drives this entire adventure scheme," the filmmaker said.
What Varanasi Is About?
Varanasi unfolds around a global crisis linked to a massive asteroid called Shambhavi, which threatens the city of Varanasi. Mahesh Babu plays Rudhra, a rugged archaeologist and explorer who is brought into a dangerous mission involving an ancient cosmic artefact. The task requires him to recover the object before a larger catastrophe can unfold.
He is joined by Mandakini, a historian who is also a skilled markswoman. The story takes the characters across several parts of the world, including the jungles of Africa, the frozen landscapes of Antarctica and different locations in Europe.
Their mission is complicated further by Kumbha, a technologically advanced antagonist who pursues them as they attempt to uncover the connection between the present-day crisis and Varanasi's mythical past. The solution to preventing the future disaster is said to lie within that past, placing mythology at the centre of the film's adventure narrative.
