Jailer 2 fails to match the impact of the first Rajinikanth film. The sequel feels repetitive with a weak plot and lacks the emotional depth of the original story. Adding many new actors like Vidya Balan and Mithun Chakraborty did not help, and even the star cameos felt like missed opportunities.
Jailer had a proper arc for Rajinikanth's Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer who has settled into a quiet family life after retiring. His transformation into an angry man just before the interval was as massy as it gets. That element of surprise is missing this time around. Jailer 2 gets repetitive, following the same pattern throughout: a villain tries to harm Muthuvel, he defeats them, and another villain takes their place. This continues for much of the film, leaving little room for excitement or surprise.
2. Where's the emotional connect?
Jailer had a beating heart at its core: a father devastated by his son's untimely death, for which he blames himself. His quest for revenge gave the action a strong emotional reason, with the story reaching a painful turning point when he discovers the son is alive and ultimately has to get him killed for his actions. Jailer 2 has no such emotional pull. There is an attempt to show the family's reaction when they learn what Muthuvel did to his son, but the moment comes too late and ends too quickly to make much of an impact.
3. Too many actors, too little impact
Jailer 2 adds several actors to its cast, including Mithun Chakraborty and Vidya Balan as members of the antagonist's family. While it is understandable that any sequel tries to raise the stakes, the film seems to go overboard. Vidya's character, for instance, has little impact on the story. Adding more star power does little to improve the film and only makes it longer.
4. An unimpressive cameo
Jailer had some delightful cameos by Mohanlal, Shivarajkumar and Jackie Shroff. This time, Hrithik Roshan joins the mix. While he looks great on screen, Nelson doesn't make the best use of him. His appearance is a routine cameo in which the hero's friend arrives to rescue him, much like Hrithik's appearance in the Hindi film Alpha earlier this year. For a film that knows how to make a star's entry exciting, this feels like a missed opportunity. Moreover, the trio of superstars mentioned earlier are also relegated to blink and miss appearances this time.
