The success of Saiyaara (2025) made Aneet Padda a star, but her real test starts now. The film collected over Rs. 575 crores worldwide, yet critics wonder if she can pull crowds alone. Aneet said she wanted to headline Shakti Shalini to prove her worth beyond the hype of her debut.
The phenomenal success of Saiyaara (2025) changed the fortunes of Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda overnight. The Mohit Suri directorial emerged as one of the biggest surprises in recent Bollywood history, collecting more than Rs. 575 crores worldwide. The film's success catapulted its young leads into the limelight and made them two of the most talked-about newcomers in the industry. However, more than a year later, an uncomfortable question deserves to be asked: Has Bollywood been too quick to crown Aneet Padda as its next big superstar?
There is no denying that Aneet made an impression in Saiyaara. Her performance was appreciated, her chemistry with Ahaan Panday became a major talking point, and she managed to connect with young audiences. But the success of Saiyaara was hardly an individual achievement. The film benefited enormously from Mohit Suri's direction, its chartbuster music, emotional storyline, aggressive audience interest and, most importantly, the chemistry between its lead pair.
Would the film have achieved the same extraordinary numbers without these factors? More importantly, would audiences have turned up in equally large numbers if Aneet had headlined the film without Ahaan Panday? These are questions that the success of Saiyaara alone cannot answer.
Interestingly, Aneet now appears ready to take on precisely that challenge. In a recent interview, the actress revealed that she consciously wanted to do a solo film after Saiyaara and was delighted to get the opportunity to headline Shakti Shalini, part of Maddock Films' popular horror-comedy universe.
Her confidence is understandable, and her ambition deserves appreciation. However, the decision also brings considerable pressure.
Unlike Saiyaara, where the romantic pairing was a major attraction, Shakti Shalini places Aneet in a substantially more prominent position. At the same time, the film benefits from its association with an established cinematic universe. Therefore, even a big opening may not conclusively establish her individual box-office pull.
This is where Bollywood needs to distinguish between overnight popularity and genuine superstardom.
The Hindi film industry has witnessed several instances of newcomers making a sensational debut, only to discover that sustaining audience interest is far more difficult than generating it initially. A single blockbuster can create enormous visibility, social-media popularity and lucrative opportunities. But genuine stardom is demonstrated through consistency, audience loyalty and the ability to draw viewers across different films and genres.
For Aneet, Shakti Shalini represents an opportunity to show that she can move beyond the romantic image that made her famous. It will also offer an important indication of whether audiences are invested in Aneet Padda the performer or primarily in the magic that Saiyaara created.
To be fair, expecting a young actress to single-handedly justify the expectations generated by a Rs. 575 crore blockbuster is unreasonable. A film's success depends on several factors, including its story, direction, music, marketing and release strategy.
Nevertheless, the speed at which the industry elevates promising newcomers into the superstar category warrants scrutiny.
Aneet Padda has undoubtedly arrived. But arriving in Bollywood and establishing oneself as a bankable superstar are two very different achievements.
Whether Shakti Shalini becomes another blockbuster or not, her future choices and performances will be far more revealing than the unprecedented success of her breakthrough film. For now, the excitement surrounding her is understandable. The superstar tag, however, may need to wait.
