Sourav Ganguly moved to stop the film Doosra, claiming it violated his rights. The High Court said the hearing will proceed on Friday without blocking the release. Amid this, actor Prosenjit Chatterjee wished the team success. He wrote, "Today, as Doosra begins its journey on the big screen, I extend my warmest wishes."
Former India Skipper Sourav Ganguly, who is currently hosting Bigg Boss Bangla had recently moved to halt the distribution of Doosra, a film he claimed violated his commercial and personal rights. The High Court made it plain that the hearing on Ganguly's plea would proceed on Friday and that it was not preventing the release of the movie. Amid all this, Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee has now wished the film success at theatres.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Chatterjee, shared a poster of Doosra, and wrote, "Some stories go beyond the screen they make us pause, reflect, and look at life a little differently." He went on to add, "Today, as Doosra begins its journey on the big screen, I extend my warmest wishes to the entire team. Here’s to the power of cinema and stories that deserve to be told." He concluded his post by writing, "All the very best to the entire team of Doosra."
The dispute began when Sourav Ganguly and production house Luv Films LLP approached the Delhi High Court seeking to restrain the theatrical release and other distribution of Doosra. Their petition alleged that the film’s trailer and promotional campaign used Ganguly’s identity and iconic career moments without authorisation.
A key point of contention is India’s memorable victory over England in the 2002 NatWest Series final. Ganguly’s shirtless celebration from the Lord’s balcony after the win remains one of Indian cricket’s most iconic images. The petitioners argued that using such moments in the film’s promotional material could mislead audiences into believing that Ganguly was associated with or endorsing the project.
At the heart of the dispute are personality rights and contractual rights relating to a proposed biopic on the former India captain. Ganguly and Luv Films contend that Doosra commercially exploits his name, image and career-defining moments without permission.
Luv Films has also cited an agreement dated August 5, 2021, under which it claims exclusive rights to develop a biopic on Ganguly. Titled Dada – The Sourav Ganguly Story, the film is scheduled for release on May 14, 2027. The petitioners allege that Doosra’s promotional campaign could infringe upon these rights, a claim the filmmakers have disputed.
