Ranbir Kapoor may soon be adding another role to his already busy professional life. The Ramayana actor, who has some exciting projects in the pipeline, is reportedly looking to explore the world of OTT production. According to a report in Variety India, Ranbir is keen to back long-format streaming shows and support interesting stories that may not necessarily fit the traditional box-office mould.
Interestingly, the actor is not looking to feature in these projects. Instead, he wants to focus on backing stories as a producer. He has reportedly been reading scripts and is interested in collaborating with fresh writers and directors.
Ranbir Kapoor Interested In OTT Production?
The Indian streaming space has opened up opportunities for stories that go beyond conventional commercial cinema. From unusual characters to experimental formats, OTT platforms have given filmmakers the freedom to explore different kinds of narratives.
Ranbir is said to be interested in tapping into this space. His focus is reportedly on high-concept stories and scripts that might not necessarily follow the usual box-office formula. By backing web shows, the actor hopes to work with new-age storytellers and bring diverse narratives to audiences.
Does Ranbir Kapoor Already Have Experience As A Producer?
While this may be a new direction for him, Ranbir is not entirely unfamiliar with production. The actor previously joined hands with filmmaker Anurag Basu for Jagga Jasoos under Picture Shuru Productions. He also co-produced Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva.
However, venturing into OTT production would give him an opportunity to build a different kind of content slate and explore stories in a longer format.
Alia Bhatt, Shah Rukh Khan And Other Stars Who Have Backed OTT Projects
Ranbir's reported interest in production comes at a time when several Bollywood stars are expanding their presence behind the camera.
His wife, Alia Bhatt, has already ventured into production with her banner, Eternal Sunshine Productions. She co-produced Netflix's Darlings, in which she also played the lead role, along with her sister Shaheen Bhatt. The banner has also backed the streaming show Don't Be Shy, which premiered on Prime Video on September 25. Alia has also ventured into theatrical production with Jigra.
Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment has backed several streaming projects, including Bard of Blood, Class of '83 and The Ba***ds of Bollywood. Farhan Akhtar's Excel Entertainment, meanwhile, has been behind popular shows such as Inside Edge, Mirzapur and Made in Heaven.
Several other actors have also explored the OTT space. Kriti Sanon co-founded Blue Butterfly Films with her sister Nupur and produced Netflix's Do Patti. Priyanka Chopra Jonas backed The White Tiger under Purple Pebble Pictures, while Kangana Ranaut produced Tiku Weds Sheru for Prime Video.
Hrithik Roshan is another actor making his way into the streaming production space. His banner, HRX Films, is backing the upcoming Prime Video project Storm.
What's Next On Ranbir Kapoor's Work Front?
While the actor may be exploring opportunities behind the camera, his acting commitments remain equally packed. Ranbir is currently gearing up for Ramayana, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, in which he stars alongside Yash and Sai Pallavi. The film is scheduled for a Diwali release on November 5.
He also has Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film Love & War, Animal Park and Brahmāstra Part Two: Dev in his upcoming lineup.
If Ranbir does take the OTT production route, it will mark an interesting new chapter in his career.
