Jennifer Lawrence has opened up about an unsettling experience on a film set, revealing that crew members who had not been approved to watch intimate material were present while she filmed a nude scene. The Oscar-winning actor said she confronted the situation, stressing the importance of protecting performers, particularly newcomers who may fear being labelled difficult. Lawrence also reflected on becoming more confident about asserting herself in Hollywood, her experience filming Die My Love with Robert Pattinson, and why she has grown more comfortable with nudity and challenging conventional beauty standards.
Lawrence was asked during her appearance on Call Her Daddy podcast if she had become more comfortable advocating for herself during her career. She said actors need to be malleable when they are working with directors, but experience has taught her when to speak up. "You have to be malleable. That's part of the job," said Lawrence, referring to the physical transformations required for roles, such as changing her hair colour and style for Lynne Ramsay's Die My Love.
But she said that she had become more assertive because she understood her position in the industry better. "There was an instance on set where crew members who were not approved when I was doing nudity were on set. I came down hard on it," she revealed.
Lawrence said of her objection. She wanted to set a clear standard to guard less experienced performers in similar situations. “If we are not setting that principle, then what on earth is going to happen to an 18-year-old unknown when she shows up and there are people on set who are not approved to be there?" she asked.
She pointed out that a young actor might feel pressured to remain silent out of fear of damaging their professional reputation, even when uncomfortable with the situation. For Lawrence, addressing the incident was essential to ensuring that performers could expect appropriate boundaries and respect while filming intimate scenes.
Lawrence has previously opened up about her approach to nudity in promotion of Ramsay's film Die My Love, which stars Robert Pattinson. Speaking to the Las Culturistas podcast, she said she felt safe working with Pattinson and that their professional relationship wasn’t as awkward as she might have expected.
"We did not have [an intimacy coordinator], or maybe we did but we didn’t really… I felt really safe with Rob," she said.
Lawrence described Pattinson as respectful and said their conversations often centred on their children and relationships. She added that she would have wanted additional support if she had sensed discomfort or inappropriate behaviour. Her comments pointed out the need for trust among co-stars, but also recognised that actors have varying needs when filming intimate scenes.
