Chennai-based Appasamy Associates acquired German ophthalmic equipment maker RUCK on Thursday to expand its global surgical business. CEO Senthil Kumar said, "RUCK's addition marks an important step in Appasamy's ambition to build a global surgical ophthalmology business." This deal adds specialized phaco-vitrectomy technology to the company’s growing medical equipment portfolio.

Chennai-based Appasamy Associates, backed by private equity firm Warburg Pincus, on Thursday announced the acquisition of German ophthalmic surgical equipment manufacturer RUCK as part of its plans to expand its global surgical ophthalmology business. The company did not disclose the financial details of the transaction. RUCK, which has more than four decades of experience in ophthalmic surgery, manufactures surgical systems used in cataract and vitreoretinal procedures. Its product portfolio includes Pentasys, Qube and Qube Pro, with the latter serving as its flagship surgical platform. The Qube Pro and Pentasys systems are widely used by ophthalmic surgeons in Germany and the Benelux region. The acquisition will strengthen Appasamy's surgical equipment portfolio by adding RUCK's specialised phaco-vitrectomy technology, while retaining its engineering and product development capabilities in Germany. Appasamy, which has established medical technology centres in Denmark and San Francisco, aims to build a broader global ophthalmic surgical equipment business through the acquisition. "RUCK's addition marks an important step in Appasamy's ambition to build a global surgical ophthalmology business, strengthening our portfolio with specialised phaco-vitrectomy technology and a strong engineering heritage," said Senthil Kumar, CEO of Appasamy. Kumar said there was a need in India for a dependable, CE-marked phaco-vitrectomy platform, adding that RUCK's Qube Pro system could address this demand. He added that RUCK would gain access to additional resources and capabilities to support the development of its existing and future products.
