The University of Manchester has announced plans to set up a centre for education, research and innovation in Bengaluru. The proposed centre will help students gain practical experience through internships, work placements and industry-led projects, while strengthening research and industry partnerships in India.

The centre will bring together academics, businesses and entrepreneurs to work on shared challenges and create opportunities for students and researchers, the university said in an announcement on October 15.

It will build on the university’s Partner-Enabled Learning model, which connects degree programmes with real-world projects involving employers, public bodies and community organisations.

The university already has partnerships with Indian organisations, including Reliance, Tata and Infosys. It also works with institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, IIT Kharagpur, BITS Pilani and the Manipal Academy of Higher Education.

Professor Duncan Ivison, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester, said, “There is an incredible depth to Manchester’s relationship with India across education, business and culture. Our new Centre will be at the heart of deepening those relationships and I’m very excited to see what we can give, and what we can learn over the coming years.”

The announcement was made at an event at Science Gallery Bengaluru as part of the first Great North Mayoral Mission to India, held from October 12 to 16, 2026.
