Conventional compressor-based air conditioners could lose their dominance within 15-20 years. Hersh Shah, CEO of IRM India Affiliate, said, "The eventual successor to a split AC may therefore be an integrated building system." By 2050, these familiar appliances might get replaced by smarter, passive cooling methods that change our homes.

The eventual successor to a split AC may therefore be an integrated building system combining passive surfaces, storage, independent dehumidification, solid-state modules and intelligent controls, rather than another wall-mounted appliance, notes IRM India Affiliate's CEO Hersh Shah.

My prediction is that within 15-20 years, conventional compressor-based air conditioners could begin losing their dominance. By 2050, the familiar split AC may become commercially redundant in some markets. The reason will not be declining demand for cooling. It will be the emergence of fundamentally different ways to deliver it.
