Sequoia Capital is closing its London office, leading to expected job cuts. The firm announced the decision on Wednesday, saying it no longer needs a local presence in the UK. "This is not about the team — they are excellent. We simply don’t see the need for a local presence."
Sequoia Capital is closing its London office, with several employees set to leave the venture capital company. Sequoia announced the decision on Wednesday, saying it no longer sees the need to maintain a local presence in the UK.
Sequoia Capital said the decision was not related to the performance of its London team, which it described as excellent. It added that it would continue supporting European founders and companies from its base in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The move is likely to result in job cuts, although the company has not disclosed the number of roles affected.
The closure comes as the UK continues its efforts to strengthen its technology and artificial intelligence sectors by attracting investment. However, many European technology companies have also looked to the US for funding and business growth.
Why is Sequoia closing its London office?
In a statement shared on X, Sequoia said it was making several changes to simplify its operations and focus on its core investment activities. The company said it had moved away from some programmes and reduced complexity across its operating and investment teams.
Explaining the London decision, the company said, "This is not about the team — they are excellent. We simply don’t see the need for a local presence."
Sequoia also said it was moving away from a roughly 20-year period of expansion, during which it built businesses across different regions. According to the firm, "One unintended side effect was hierarchy; it required real management to run the operating side of our business, and this crept over into the investing team." It has now made internal changes to simplify its structure and give partners greater independence.
Sequoia's wider business changes
The London office closure is part of a broader set of changes announced by the firm. Sequoia said it had ended its Arc accelerator and Scouts programmes and streamlined its operating and investment teams to focus on fewer activities.
The company also said it had moved away from separate early-stage and growth investment teams, bringing them together under one organisation. "There is no more “Early & Growth”. There is only Sequoia. We are one team, operating under one shared mission. This should make things more seamless for founders as they go from stage to stage," it said.
Sequoia also stated that it had raised around $10 billion in new funds, although it did not specify when the funds were raised. The firm said its focus would remain on the quality of its investments and the support it provides to founders. “Excellence is a moving target, so we will always be changing. But for now, this is Sequoia,” the company said.
