Noel Tata will step down from six Tata Group boards on November 12 when he turns 70. He is leaving these roles to follow the group retirement policy for non-executive directors. However, he will stay on the Tata Sons board as a nominee director to keep his influence in the company.

Reaching the group retirement age, the Tata Trusts chairman is relinquishing key operating board seats while retaining his influential holding company directorship. The transition triggers leadership succession across major retail and manufacturing arms amid governance adjustments. Discover how upcoming leadership changes will impact future group strategies.

Noel Tata, chairman of Tata Trusts, is set to step down from board positions at six Tata Group companies on November 12, when he turns 70, in line with the group's retirement policy for non-executive directors.

He will, however, continue as a Tata Trusts nominee director on the board of Tata Sons, the group's holding company.

Tata currently chairs Trent, Voltas, Tata Investment Corporation, Tata International, Trent Hypermarket and Tata International West Asia DMCC in Dubai. He is also vice-chairman of Tata Steel and Titan Company and sits on the board of Inditex Trent Retail India, a joint venture linked to Spanish fashion retailer Inditex.

He is expected to continue with Trent Hypermarket, the Trent-Tesco joint venture that operates Star Bazaar and Star Daily retail outlets. The future of his other directorships remains unclear, with arrangements yet to be finalised.

The planned exits come amid reported differences between Tata and Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran over his reappointment, the interpretation of Tata Sons' Articles of Association and the holding company's proposed listing.

Tata Trusts collectively owns about 66% of Tata Sons, giving its chairman significant influence in the group's ownership and governance structure. By retaining his nominee position on the Tata Sons board, Noel Tata will continue to be represented at the holding company after leaving the operating businesses.

Under the Tata Group's governance framework, executive directors retire at 65, while non-executive, non-independent directors retire at 70. Independent directors are subject to a separate retirement threshold.

The transition is expected to require succession arrangements for the chairmanships of Trent, Voltas, Tata International and Tata Investment Corporation, as well as the vice-chairmanships of Tata Steel and Titan.
