Jio has filed 7,220 patents, making it India’s only company in global top 20 rankings. Akash Ambani said, “The proprietary end-to-end technology stack has given us the ability to play across the value chain.” Over 12,000 engineers helped build this stack, which now supports 55 crore Indians across the country.
India's tech companies are focusing on building their own technology to meet local needs and compete in global markets. Jio is making its mark in this space, with 7,220 patent filings and a place among the world’s top 20 patent filers, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Speaking at the launch event for Jio Platforms’ initial public offering (IPO), Akash Ambani, Managing Director of Jio Platforms, said the company has developed and deployed its technology stack in India to serve millions of customers. He credited more than 12,000 Jio engineers with contributing to its technology development and patent filings.

Jio Focuses on Homegrown Technology
Akash Ambani said Jio has built an end-to-end technology stack spanning its mobile network, home broadband services, devices, operating systems and digital applications. According to him, the company has developed, deployed and operates this technology to support its connectivity and digital services.
“This end-to-end stack is not only created by us; we've created it, we've deployed it, and we operate it for 55 crore Indians, and that is the pillar of our strength,” he said.
He said the approach is meant to improve the customer experience and help Jio develop services suited to Indian users' needs. The company also sees its technology as a potential source of growth beyond the domestic market, with plans to work with international telecom operators.
Akash Ambani said Jio wants India to become a technology exporter rather than remain dependent on imported solutions.
“The proprietary end-to-end technology stack has given us the ability to play across the value chain and a potential for India to become an exporter of technology rather than an importer of technology. Extensive future-ready infrastructure,” he added.
He said that the company intends to use its technology platform to explore opportunities in both developed and developing markets.
Jio’s Digital Growth and Customer Base
During the presentation, Ambani said Jio has built a customer base of around 53 crore people since its launch in 2016. He also highlighted the company’s role in India’s data consumption growth, saying Jio carries more than 60% of the country’s digital traffic.
According to him, customers on Jio’s network use average 43.7GB of data per month. Ambani also said the company’s 5G rollout had made it the world’s largest 5G operator outside China.

Akash Ambani highlighted Jio’s network infrastructure and technology development, including more than 3.6 lakh telecom towers and over one million route kilometres of fibre across India.
Jio Looks Beyond Telecom Connectivity
Ambani outlined four key growth areas for Jio Platforms: mobile services, home broadband, enterprise services, and monetising its technology stack.
In home broadband, the company aims to expand beyond its existing reach by using wireless technology to connect more households. Ambani said Jio sees significant potential in extending broadband services across India, including areas beyond major cities.
He said Jio sees growth opportunities in enterprise digital services, including banking and hospitality. He said 65% of India’s bank branches are connected to Jio and highlighted the company’s plans to expand its presence in the enterprise market.
"Today we want to make sure that we are not only finding broadband market share, but the entire digital services market share, which is probably addressed in a 56 billion dollar market opportunity," he said.
He also said Jio plans to partner with telecom operators worldwide to offer its end-to-end technology stack as a managed service rather than just a software service.
