India's gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections surged 22.9 percent year-on-year to Rs 2.31 lakh crore in October 2026, registering the fastest growth in over four years, according to data released on November 1.
The sharp increase marked an acceleration from the 14.7 percent growth recorded in September and extended the streak of monthly GST collections exceeding Rs 2 lakh crore to four consecutive months.
October's collections were the second-highest in the current financial year, after the Rs 2.43 lakh crore recorded in April.
The sharp acceleration was largely driven by revenues from imports, which surged 42.2 percent year-on-year to Rs 72,246 crore, compared with Rs 50,796 crore in October last year.
Domestic GST revenues grew at a comparatively slower pace of 15.8 percent to Rs 1.59 lakh crore from Rs 1.37 lakh crore a year earlier.
Net GST revenue increased 25.6 percent to Rs 2.03 lakh crore, compared with Rs 1.62 lakh crore in October 2025.
Total refunds rose 6.5 percent to Rs 27,934 crore during the month, considerably slower than the growth in gross collections.
The latest figures also indicate an acceleration in tax revenue growth over recent months. GST collections grew 13.9 percent in June, 15.4 percent in July, 14.3 percent in August and 14.7 percent in September before accelerating to 22.9 percent in October.
For the April-October period of FY27, cumulative gross GST collections stood at Rs 14.78 lakh crore, an increase of 13.2 percent over Rs 13.05 lakh crore in the corresponding period last year.
Net GST collections for the first seven months of the financial year rose 12.6 percent to Rs 12.69 lakh crore.
UP sees stronger increase
Among major states, Maharashtra remained the largest contributor to domestic GST collections, with revenues rising 13 percent to Rs 35,150 crore in October.
Karnataka recorded collections of Rs 15,922 crore, up 18 percent, while Gujarat registered a 16 percent increase to Rs 13,516 crore.
Uttar Pradesh recorded a relatively stronger increase of 24 percent to Rs 10,235 crore, while collections in Delhi rose 10 percent to Rs 9,298 crore.
Assam registered one of the sharpest increases among states, with collections rising 47 percent to Rs 1,934 crore. Jharkhand recorded 31 percent growth, while Madhya Pradesh registered a 29 percent increase.
However, the growth was uneven across states. Tamil Nadu's collections increased just 3 percent to Rs 11,661 crore, while Himachal Pradesh saw a 2 percent decline.
