The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) seized more than 3,270 metric tonnes of food products worth an estimated Rs 81.80 crore and suspended over 1,100 licences during a nationwide inspection drive conducted between September 1 and November 5.
In a series of posts on X, the food safety regulator said it inspected 56,431 establishments across States and Union Territories in coordination with State Food Safety Authorities. During the drive, it also issued 10,047 improvement notices to establishments found violating food safety rules.
More than 2,200 food samples fail safety tests
The FSSAI collected 43,939 food samples during the inspection drive, of which 23,648 were analysed. Of these, 2,273 samples were found to be non-compliant with prescribed food safety standards.
The seized products included cooking oils, milk, paneer, sweets, ghee, bakery items, chocolates, ice cream, namkeen, packaged food and festive hampers.
The findings highlight violations across several food categories, with authorities taking action against products that failed to meet safety standards.
FSSAI suspends 1,133 licences, seals 314 establishments
Highlighting the action taken during the drive, the FSSAI said it suspended 1,133 licences and cancelled the licences of 52 food establishments. It also sealed 314 establishments and initiated 410 prosecutions.
"Through rigorous checks on over 56,000 food establishments, authorities took decisive action against substandard practices, issuing over 10,000 improvement notices and suspending more than 1,100 licences to maintain uncompromising safety standards," it said.
The regulator added that it would continue working with State Food Safety Authorities to ensure better compliance with food safety standards across the country.
FSSAI steps up checks ahead of festive season
The FSSAI has intensified its action against food safety violations this year, investigating several eateries and e-commerce companies.
Earlier, it banned the sale of Nestle's "Low Fat Dairy Whitener" after a sample collected from The Lalit hotel in New Delhi's Connaught Place was declared "unsafe" and "substandard".
Last month, the regulator also directed food safety authorities across all States and Union Territories to increase inspections and enforcement ahead of the festive season. The move aimed to prevent the sale of "adulterated, counterfeited and unsafe food products".
The latest nationwide drive reflects the regulator's efforts to curb food safety violations during the festive season. FSSAI is expected to continue inspections and monitoring to ensure food businesses follow prescribed safety rules.
