Synopsis
The A24 documentary 'You Can See Everything' tells the story of Elizabeth Holmes and her partner William Evans. Holmes, the founder of Theranos, faced legal challenges and was sentenced for wire fraud. Evans, an MIT graduate, is the head of an AI medical testing startup called Haemanthus. They had met at a charity event and welcomed two children while she faced her fraud trial.
The new A24 documentary “You Can See Everything", which has become the talk of the town, tells the tale of the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced founder of the biotech startup Theranos. The film, directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, also takes an intimate look into Holmes' personal life, with a sizable amount of footage given to her partner William "Billy" Evans.
What does Evans do?
According to his profile on LinkedIn, Evans earned a bachelor’s degree in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), graduating in 2015. He is also the chief executive officer (CEO) of Haemanthus, an AI-driven medical testing startup, working in the same realm as Theranos.
In the early 1950s, Evans' grandparents founded Evans Hotels, a hospitality chain comprising several luxury hotels in California, according to NPR. The properties include The Lodge Terry Pines, the Bahia Resort Hotel, and the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa, according to Elle.
How did he meet Holmes?
Holmes and Evans had met at a charity event in October 2017, she told the People magazine in an interview from prison. One year after meeting, Evans proposed to Holmes. "I asked him 20 times if he wanted to spend his life with me," Holmes said in the interview. "There were a million reasons why not." They got engaged in August 2018.
In a 2023 interview with The New York Times, Evans said: "To say we immediately fell in love isn’t an overstatement."
Holmes and Evans welcomed their first child, son William Holmes Evans, shortly before her fraud trial began in 2021. Holmes gave birth to their second child, daughter Invicta, in 2023, as per court documents.
Evans attended several of Holmes' court appearances, and also appealed for her sentence to be reduced. "My heart is broken with the thought of spending any days away from Liz, for a future in which my son grows up with a relationship with his mother on the other side of glass armed by guards,” he said in November 2022.
Evans talks about the doc
In a recent appearance on the All In podcast, Evans revealed he had not seen the documentary by that time. "I haven’t seen it. I might think this is the dumbest thing I have ever done," he said, according to Variety. He also spoke of the reason he wanted to make the film ahead of Holmes' time in prison. "There’s been a lot of media produced on her. There’s been a lot of people who have told her story. That narrative is pretty ossified. The whole idea was: Here she is, see her and make up your own mind."
In January 2022, Holmes was convicted of three counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. She is serving a nine-year prison sentence, and is currently at the Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas.
