Walt Disney is weighing another round of layoffs as the company looks to reduce costs and improve operational efficiency, with thousands of employees potentially facing job losses, according to a Bloomberg report published on Monday.
The entertainment giant has reportedly asked certain managers to identify opportunities to cut annual expenses by approximately 20 per cent. The exercise is part of a broader effort to reassess spending across the company under CEO Josh D’Amaro. However, the scale of the proposed workforce reductions has not been finalised, and the report does not specify how many employees could be affected.
The proposed cuts come as Disney faces pressure across several parts of its business. Its film division has been dealing with inconsistent box office performances, while its streaming operations continue to operate in an intensely competitive market. The company is also contending with slower international attendance at its theme parks, alongside the growing use of artificial intelligence, which is changing how parts of the entertainment industry operate.
The impact of the proposed restructuring is expected to differ across Disney's business units. Some divisions could face deeper reductions than others, depending on where managers identify opportunities to lower spending.
Disney is also expected to redirect some of the money saved through the exercise towards areas it considers important for future growth. These include film and television production, technology, theme parks and its cruise business.
The company had around 2,31,000 employees at the end of fiscal 2025, underlining the scale of its workforce. A fresh round of reductions would add to several rounds of layoffs Disney has carried out over the past few years as it attempts to control expenses.
In September, Reuters reported that Disney had cut several hundred positions across its human resources and technology teams. This followed another round in April, when the company eliminated approximately 1,000 jobs. Disney also reduced its workforce by several hundred employees in 2025.
The entertainment company undertook a significantly larger restructuring in 2023, when it announced plans to eliminate around 7,000 jobs. The move formed part of a wider cost-reduction programme introduced under then-CEO Bob Iger, which aimed to save approximately $5.5 billion.
Disney's reported plans come against the backdrop of wider cost-cutting across the global media and entertainment industry. Streaming platform Netflix has also reduced its workforce, while Skydance, which acquired Warner Bros Discovery earlier this year, has undertaken job cuts as part of its efforts to manage costs.
