A hidden black hole stayed invisible until it destroyed a passing star, revealing a cosmic mystery

Astronomers identified a dormant supermassive black hole 30,000 light-years from its galaxy's center on July 27, 2026. The object revealed itself by destroying a passing star. Suvi Gezari said, "What's new is that, until now, we've started with the assumption that supermassive black holes reside in the centers of massive galaxies."
