From wreckage to 'rebirth': How thousands of tons of bridge rubble are now saving Chesapeake Bay’s ecosystem.

In 2017, officials placed 20,000 tons of demolished Virginia bridge material into the Chesapeake Bay to create an artificial reef. Instead of using a landfill, they cleaned the concrete and moved it offshore. This project helped fish, crabs, and oysters by providing new surfaces to live and grow on.
