Niger mutiny puts Russia’s expanding role in the Sahel to the test

Niger’s military government contained an attempted mutiny that started Saturday at Base 101 in Niamey. Russian personnel helped government forces regain control after fighting spread to sensitive sites. Russia’s ambassador Viktor Voropaev said, “Nigerien authorities requested the force’s assistance to neutralise the mutineers.” Many soldiers were killed or arrested during unrest.
