OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company is entering a “new era of discovery” as OpenAI released a broad set of mathematical results produced by an internal frontier AI model.

“We are entering a new era of discovery now,” Altman said in a post on X while sharing OpenAI’s latest research publication on AI progress in mathematics.

In the publication, OpenAI said it was releasing a range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model, along with details on how the results were generated and evaluated.

The company said it is publishing the results through a GitHub repository, including formalisations of many of the proofs in Lean, a programming language that allows mathematical proofs to be checked by computer.

OpenAI said the repository would be updated with additional formalisations as they become available.

OpenAI also said it was publishing additional details about the process behind the results. These include 10 summaries of the model’s reasoning, estimates of compute used in terms of ChatGPT Pro usage, and statistics on the number of problems attempted.

According to OpenAI, the average result used computing equivalent to roughly three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking.

The company said it had consulted the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study while developing its approach to releasing the mathematical results.

OpenAI said the aim was to push the frontier of human knowledge and enable further progress in mathematics.

“We will be funding a series of workshops, conferences, and special programs around the understanding of major results produced by AI—we will share more on this in the near future,” the company said.

OpenAI said it is also working to responsibly release the model that produced the results and will continue evaluating its internal frontier models on mathematics and other sciences.
