Out with humanities, in with tech: why China's universities are undergoing a reset

China replaced over 12,000 university programmes in arts, humanities, and management with courses in AI, semiconductors, and robotics over the past five years. Beijing started this shift to tackle rising graduate unemployment. Official data showed the urban unemployment rate for 16-24 year olds stood at 15.6% in May 2026.
