Inside India's quest to build a sovereign AI chip

In February 2025, India started work on an indigenous AI chip to reduce dependency on foreign technology. Following US restrictions on Nvidia chips in January 2025, the government tasked C-Dac with this mission. One official said, "C-Dac is the sole body with the expertise and know-how to create strategic chips."
