Google is changing Gemini AI plans from October 9, 2026. Google said, “Starting in October 2026, there will be changes to model availability for Gemini Apps when you use a personal account.” Free users get smaller models, while paid subscribers lose access to Pro models unless they upgrade their monthly plans.
Your Gemini access is going to change soon. From October 9, 2026, Google is updating how you use Gemini, with access to different AI models depending more clearly on your AI plan. In effect, free Gemini users, and even AI Plus subscribers, will be restricted from using the more powerful Pro models.
“Starting in October 2026, there will be changes to model availability for Gemini Apps when you use a personal account,” Google wrote on a support page. “These changes will start to take effect for users without an AI subscription on October 9th.”
Google said that if you have a Google AI Plus subscription, you will receive an email that explains the changes, and when they go into effect for your personal Google account.
Google Gemini AI plan changes
Under the revised structure, free Gemini users will be limited to smaller Flash-Lite models. Those with AI Plus plans, that cost Rs 399 per month in India, will be able to use Flash-Lite and the more powerful Flash AI models. However, AI Plus plan users will no longer get access to Gemini Pro models, such as Gemini 3 Pro.
If you want the more powerful and larger Gemini models at your disposal, you will need to have a Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra subscription. The AI Pro plan is priced at Rs 1,950 per month, while AI Ultra starts at Rs 6,500 per month. Both AI Pro and AI Ultra plans continue to have access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro models.
Google is also preparing another change inside the Gemini app this month. For each available model, users will be able to choose between low, medium and high effort levels. According to the support page, higher effort levels improve the model’s ability to complete tasks and provide more thorough answers, but they also use more of the usage limit.
Currently, Gemini offers a simpler extended thinking option for complex problem-solving. The new effort levels would also bring the app closer to the controls available in Google AI Studio and Antigravity.
These changes come days after Google announced Gemini 4 Argon, which the company calls its most powerful AI model yet. Though Argon is currently available for select partners as part of a limited release.
